KingAfa - Sitiveni Fehoko from Haano Haapai 2007 decendant of the Lemaki clan from Samoa .

King 'Afa is a Pacific Island cultural tattoo artist, creative director, and art archivist based in Los Angeles, California. Raised and trained between Tonga, Fiji, and Aotearoa New Zealand, and across Hawai'i, he carries a training lineage that no other Polynesian tattoo artist in the world holds in full.

THE MĀORI TRAINING — Moko Ink, Auckland, 2005

In 2005, King 'Afa trained at Moko Ink studio in Auckland, New Zealand, working directly under Inia Taylor III. Inia Taylor III (Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Toa, Te Ātiawa, Ngāti Koroki) is one of Aotearoa New Zealand's foremost Tā Moko master artists — a sculptor, painter, and the Art Director of the landmark New Zealand film Once Were Warriors (1994). He is featured in the major Māori tattoo documentary alongside the Tā Moko master artists of all the iwi of Aotearoa. He trained alongside Carl Cocker — founder of Kalia Tattoo Auckland, who worked at Moko Ink in 2003, 2004, and 2006, and spent 22 years living inside Māori cultural life in New Zealand.

King 'Afa was trained in art of Tā Moko, Moko Kauae, Pūhoro, and Whakairo (Māori wood carving) — the full structural, spiritual, and tribal logic of Māori tattoo systems across all iwi of Aotearoa. He has returned to New Zealand continuously since 2005, over 20 years of living inside Māori culture — not observing it.

THE TONGAN MATERIAL CULTURE TRAINING — Sione Tuione Pulotu, Hawai'i

King 'Afa was trained multiple times across several years by Sione Tuione Pulotu, in Laʻie and Hauʻula on the island of Oʻahu, Hawai'i.

Sione Tuione Pulotu arrived in Hawai'i in the early 1960s as a labor missionary from Tonga and has been at the Polynesian Cultural Center since 1962 — over 60 years of unbroken contribution to Pacific cultural preservation. In 2005, he was officially recognized as a Living Treasure of Hawai'i by the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawai'i, honored at a state banquet at the Sheraton-Waikiki Hotel for his contributions in perpetuating the traditions, spirit, and values of Hawai'i. He is one of the foremost Tongan master carvers alive. He built a 105-foot sailing canoe for King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV of Tonga, launched in 2000. He carved BYU-Hawai'i's Iosepa — a 57-foot wa'a kaulua double-hulled Hawaiian voyaging canoe — which now serves as a floating classroom for the university's Hawaiian Studies program and is permanently berthed at the Polynesian Cultural Center's Hawaiian Village.

Under Pulotu, King 'Afa was trained in:

  • Polynesian and Tongan carving techniques and art history

  • The construction logic of the Tongan Kalia sailing ship and Tongiaki voyaging canoe

  • The ancient skills, tools, and techniques of Pacific material culture

  • Tukufakaholo — the living transmission of Tongan history, customs, values, and culture through disciplined practice

This is not study. This is apprenticeship with one of the last living masters who holds this knowledge in full.

THE TONGAN INTELLECTUAL CULTURE TRAINING — Professor Futa Helu, 2007–2008

King 'Afa was trained by Professor Futa Helu in 2007 and 2008, in Tongan art history, culture, science, and ancient wisdom.

Professor Futa Helu (1934–2010) was Tonga's most significant philosopher, historian, and educator of the 20th century. He studied philosophy under Australian empiricist John Anderson at the University of Sydney. In 1963, he founded ʻAtenisi Institute in Nukuʻalofa — the only educational institution in the Kingdom of Tonga not funded by the government or a church. ʻAtenisi began as a night school for Tongan civil servants, became a secondary school in 1964, and a university in 1975. The University of the South Pacific awarded him an honorary doctorate in literature in 1999. He is the only Tongan who independently built and sustained a fully autonomous, philosophically rigorous educational institution in Tonga. He is Tonga's Thomas Jefferson.

The personal connection deepens this further: Professor Futa Helu also taught King 'Afa's father in mathematics, science, and history in the 1970s at ʻAtenisi Institute. When King 'Afa trained under Professor Helu in 2007 and 2008, this was not a first contact — it was a continuation of a two-generation scholarly relationship between the Helu lineage and King 'Afa's family. His father was shaped by Helu's mind. King 'Afa extended that lineage into the study of Tongan art history, ancient science, and civilizational wisdom — and carried it into his design practice.

Professor Helu trained and influenced many of the most important Tongan scholars of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. King 'Afa studied under him directly, inside the intellectual tradition Helu built with his own hands.

THE PROFESSIONAL FOUNDATION — Zulu Tattoo, Los Angeles, 2006

In 2006, working at Zulu Tattoo on 3rd Street in Los Angeles with Roni Zulu, King 'Afa became the first Tongan tattoo artist and first Pacific Island Polynesian tattoo artist in the United States to receive an official professional studio paycheck at $200 per hour. He worked there from 2006 to 2011. At that time, Tongan and Polynesian tattoo was traded at garage-level value: cigarettes and beer. King 'Afa changed that permanently.

1. Professor Jason Leigh — Director, LAVA Lab, University of Hawai'i at Mānoa Professor Leigh is Director of LAVA (Laboratory for Advanced Visualization & Applications) and Co-Director of the Hawai'i Data Science Institute at UH Mānoa. He is co-inventor of the CAVE2 Hybrid Reality Environment and the SAGE scalable graphics environment, with research covered by AP News, New York Times, Popular Science, Nova ScienceNow, PBS, and Forbes. He is a panelist at the Initiative for Indigenous Futures symposium. He mentored King 'Afa and worked with him on his extensive art collection, introduced King 'Afa to artificial intelligence in 2020, and was part of the context in which King 'Afa received the Tongan AI language commission. This places King 'Afa at the intersection of Pacific cultural authority and emerging technology — a position no other tattoo artist occupies.

2. The Tongan AI Language Commission King 'Afa was commissioned to translate 1,000 English sentences into Tongan to train an AI language model — making him one of the earliest contributors to Tongan language AI development. This is a concrete, documentable, historically significant credential: a Pacific Island cultural practitioner contributing indigenous linguistic knowledge to the infrastructure of artificial intelligence. It belongs in the press kit as a standalone story angle.

3. Expanded Museum & Field Research Record The 2007–2008 Tonga History Project photography is now documented: kali (wooden headrests), kava bowls, Lapita artifact records including tattoo chisels, shell adornments, human bone tools, and the 1826 French-drawn tatau sketch from the Pea fortress — documentation of Jules Dumont d'Urville's encounter with Chief Warlord Takai and Fa'e during the war between French explorer and Tongan chiefs of Pea. This is primary field documentation, not secondary research.

4. 1996–1997 Fiji Cultural Direction 1996: King 'Afa choreographed and directed a Pacific Island cultural performance at the Suva Civic Centre featuring students from Suva Grammar School — Tongan, Samoan, Fijian, and Rotuman youth — performing a traditional Tongan-Uvea war dance taught by a student of Professor Futa Helu. 1997: He designed a Tiki mask, carved a traditional Tongan war club, handcrafted a Tongan warrior costume, contributed choreography, and performed in an Oceania-themed production at International School Suva funded by UNFPA and broadcast on Fiji TV. This establishes cultural direction and performance credentials from age 17–18, 30 years ago.

THE RESEARCH ARCHIVE

King 'Afa's design process draws from a private library of over seven bookshelves of museum-documented, academically verified cultural texts — volumes acquired from museum archives, anthropological research records, expedition field journals, and private cultural collections representing over 100 indigenous and ancient civilizations worldwide.

THE PRIVATE LIBRARY

King 'Afa's private library is one of the most extensive collections of ancestral art and cultural history documentation owned by any Polynesian tattoo artist in the world.

Built since the 1990s across over a decade of global research, the archive comprises more than seven bookshelves of museum-quality books, ethnographic studies, archaeological field records, expedition journals, and cultural documentation representing over 100 indigenous and ancient civilizations — from Polynesia, Melanesia, and Micronesia to Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. He has invested over $10,000 in acquiring volumes from museum collections, private art estates, anthropological archives, and scholarly publications.

This is not a reference library. It is a primary research archive — the foundation for every tattoo King 'Afa designs, every cultural claim he makes, and every museum exhibition, storytelling project, or cultural preservation effort he contributes to.

He does not use Pinterest, Google Images, Instagram, Procreate templates, or AI-generated designs. Every tattoo composition originates from primary cultural sources and from knowledge lived, not approximated.

"I do not use Pinterest or Google Images to design a tattoo. Every pattern I place on someone's body comes from this library, from my field research, or from cultures I have lived inside. That distinction is everything." — King 'Afa
